The'COLONNADE' is a brilliantly sculptural and exceptionally well-made Mid Century Modern design by Alfred Philippe for TRIFARI. Arresting in its simplicity of design, it consists of openwork panels with vertical lines, which are given greater definition by variously sized wider horizontal bars.
Each panel is trimed with a raised bar edge. The curved panel portions of the necklace fit beautifully around the neck. The rounded collar style choker necklace consists of 13 panels and closes with a'J' hook and features a 3 inch extender chain. The matching bracelet consists of seven rectangular links with the same design motif and has a fold-over clasp. The slightly domed round earrings have the same design motif and feature a paddle clip. This Mid Century Modernist masterpiece set is quite scarce and hard to find - apparently, relatively few were created. This TRIFARI Necklace Set would be a wonderful addition to your fine costume jewelry collection! The'Colonnade' was featured in a 1956 Trifari'Masterpiece of Jewels' magazine advertisement.
It was designed by Alfred Philippe, Trifari's head designer from 1930 to 1968, until his retirement. Necklace: Panels span 13" long x 1" wide plus a 3 extender chain.
Bracelet: 7" long x 1 1/2" wide. Since the 1920s, Trifari has been one of the most respected and admired producers of costume jewelry in the United States. Founded in 1910 by Gustavo Trifari (1883 - 1952), the Italian-immigrant son of a Napoli goldsmith, the company has designed jewelry that's been worn by countless high-profile clients, from Mamie Eisenhower to Madonna. Trifari Jewelry was first known as Trifari and Trifari, founded by Gustavo Trifari and his uncle in 1910. The company name changed to just Trifari after Gustavo's uncle left.
In 1917, Leo Krussman joined and then Carl Fishel in 1925. They renamed the Company Trifari, Krussman, and Fishel, which is where the signature mark "KTF" derived. Trifari became one of the most prolific and influential costume jewelry companies. Based in New York City, the great designer Alfred Philippe joined the company in 1930 (previously of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels) and is often credited for the superb designs, workmanship, and distinctive classic look of Trifari jewelry. Philippe remained head designer until his retirement in 1968.
